Elimination of abandoned cables
Unless indicated by the owner or another agency that unused cables are reserved for future use and the cables are marked accordingly, it is necessary to remove abandoned fiber optic cables (cable ending with a connector and not on other equipment, and that has no identification with a label for future use) as required by the National Electricity Code (NEC) or local codes.
At the choice of the owner of the place, the contractor will also be asked to remove other cables (for example copper or electricity communications). Cable removal consumes more time than installation since each cable must be carefully identified and removed so as not to damage other cables. No cable must be cut to be removed unless it has been properly identified as the cable to be removed.
All cables must be recycled properly. Most communications cables have value as scrap, not only for copper conductors but also for other metallic elements, including some plastics.
